is dedicated to old photos of Vilnius. The site's Gallery
contains photos of Vilnius for about 100 years, beginning from the
second half of XIX century until the second half of XX century. There
are a tons of modern photographs of different cities on the Internet.
But it is not easy to find old photos for three reasons: first of all,
there are not many of old pictures, secondly, they are usually
scattered across different sites, and thirdly, some resources on the
Internet simply disappear: yesterday some URL existed but today the
site is no longer available. For that we can blame the nature of the
Internet sites: on the one hand they are easily accessible, but on the
other hand, most of them if don't bring any income live short life: 3-5
years. I can not guarantee that this site will live longer. I'm just
trying to keep in one place all the photos that can be found by me. The
carries more than 1600 photos now. If you don't like this site and/or
just consider this site as a metasite containing links to other old
photos of Vilnius resources.

History of Vilnius for a hundred years of "old photos era", not to mention about the full history of the city, perhaps is uniq. In these hundred years it had been belonged to different countries: Russia, Germany, Lithuania, Poland and Soviet Union. And because of that there were a lot of changed in population demography (see Census Table), street names, belonging and name of the buildings. The central now street of the town was called: St.George avenue, A. Mickevich street, Stalin avenue, Lenin avenue and avenue of Gediminas. The main palace of the city - Presidential Palace now - first (in "before photography" era) was the Episcopal palace, then Governor-general's palace, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and the Lithuanian news agency, Representational palace, House of a Soviet Army officers, the Palace of Arts. This situation complicates a choice of photo descriptions, and I tried, when it was possible, to save signatures, which accompanied photos in places where the photos were taken from.
